I’d better give a little personal background info here: My husband’s family is a MARATHON family. They have to exercise or they go crazy. On Christmas day they strategize how to make non-fat gravy and then it’s off to the gym for their workout.
My family is the EATING family. On Christmas day we strategize our comprehensive eating game plan. Then we eat ourselves into a coma and take long, cozy naps.
Example #2: In Ottawa you can skate on the beautiful, frozen Rideau Canal. The Marathon family: Park far away for free. Hike into Dow’s Lake, sit in snow bank and put on skates. Skate 5 miles (7.8 K) up the canal. Skate 5 miles back down the canal. Skate around some more. Maybe eat a beaver tail and get a hot chocolate, maybe not.
The Eating family: Pay to park in the Dow’s Lake parking lot. Walk 50 paces to the ice. Sit on bench, put on skates. Skate 20 feet to Beaver Tail stand. Order two or three beaver tails, hot ciders and hot chocolates. Sit down at the picnic table and enjoy the buttery, sweet pastries and drinks. Skate 20 feet back to the bench, take off skates, walk to the car that still might even be warm if you did it all fast enough.
Needless to say, fitting into this heart-healthy marathon family and still being a card carrying member of the eating family requires some interesting cross training. I have to be able to hike for hours, plus be able to change gears and get my money’s worth at an all you can eat buffet.
It’s all effected me emotionally, too. Now I feel extremely guilty when I don’t get that morning walk or hike–but I have no qualms about eating my home made peanut butter cups. Eat Sees candies for breakfast, or get the decaf nonfat latte and then go for a hike…you decide.
